Gem squash is a traditional South African staple that is steamed or boiled and served in many different ways. A favourite is to remove the seeds once cooked, scoop out the flesh and mash with butter, cinnamon and sugar.
Other ways are to fill them with a variety of toppings such as, piled high with a savoury mince filling, topped with cheese and crispy breadcrumbs and then grilled in the oven.
